MICHAEL FINISHES THE GREAT WALK.
Michael wishes to thank all those who attended the finish of The Great Australian Cancer Bush Walk on Sunday 3rd May. A crowd of about sixty were present to welcome him as he took the last steps of the 6,000km trek from North to South. Michael was joined for the last 5km of the walk by David Reid, President of Bush Walking Victoria and Val Ford.
There were many family members and friends but also some special guests and people who had made long journeys themselves to share the moment with Michael. Of special note was the presence of John Olsen, the man who earlier this year competed his own trek across Australia from West to East in support of two children’s charities. John’s attendance was a wonderful gesture.
After crashing through the ‘FINISH’ banner everyone made their way into the Visitors Centre auditorium. Inside, Chris Smith acted as MC and introduced firstly Irene Manitta, representing Cancer Council Victoria. Other speakers were Mr. Phillip Davis MP for Eastern Victoria Region ad Mr. Russell Broadbent, Federal Member for Mc Millan.
Michael, of course, then took the stage and recounted some memorable moments of the walk as well as thanking the many people who have worked so hard over the past year. A wonderful mud cake, organized by Lyn Comerford, showing a photo of Michael on it was cut and devoured and hundreds of photos taken whilst ‘Three Cheers’ echoed through the building.
Michael wishes to thank particularly Phillip, Russell, David and John for attending as well as everyone who took the time to drive down to Wilsons Prom for the day. He also wishes to thank Parks Victoria for making their facilities available on the day and assisting with allowing Michael’s parents to walk with him down to South Point the day before.
Michael looks forward to catching up with all his friends and family over coming weeks and thanking everyone who has been involved in this massive event in the appropriate manner.
