The Great Walk 2007

The route as mentioned is unique as it has never been travelled before.

The total distance covered will be estimated at 6,022kms averaging approximately 100kms per week.  This will take 13 months of bush walking to complete. Michael is inspiring in both this physical and mental challenge.

Michael acknowledges there will be varied challenges to overcome and he is prepared for th

He will be walking many steps along foot tracks, fire trails, old stock routes, and dusty country roads to inspire many donations from all over Australia.

Despite just a couple of sections needing to pass through or near mundane suburbia, Michael and those fortunate to accompany him will no doubt see parts of Australia's mainland at its most beautiful and spectacular best.

Queensland

Beginning at Cape York itself, we will travel south along the Bamaga and Cape York Development Roads with an exciting diversion through Lakefield National Park then on in the direction of Cooktown.

The Bicentennial National Trail will be picked up at Mount Molloy and largely followed to the NSW border.

En route, the walk will pass through or divert through the Hann Tableland NP, Girringun NP, along The Wet Tropics Great Walk, Bald Rock NP and Washpool NP just to name a few.

The BNT will provide the spine heading southwards crossing the border near Killarney at Cullendore.

Victoria

The AAWT provides the route for most of the state, traversing the beautiful Alpine National Park, ending in the historic mining township of Walhalla.

A corridor of country roads is to be followed in the Moe area before Wilsons Promontory NP is reached. South Point marks the end of the trek.

Why North To South?

The two things Michael wishes to avoid;

Walking in Far North Queensland from early September due to heat and walking in the Southern Alps in winter. Safety is paramount in this endeavor for all concerned!

And

Psychologically, Michael has expressed the concept of getting out from one's tent and walking towards home each morning rather than away from it is highly favoured! Besides, how hard is it to 'find South' anyway?

N.S.W.

Crossing the border the BNT is followed, peeling off at various points for a number of National Parks including:

Gibralter Range NP,

Guy Fawkes River NP,

New England NP,

Oxley Wild Rivers NP,

Barrington Tops and;

Styx River National Parks.

South of Musselbrook, the huge areas of Wollemi, Blue Mountains, and Kananga Boyd National Parks will be passed through. The Jenolan Caves area will be passed through and The Six Foot Track used. The route then continues along the BNT to Canberra.

A.C.T.

The BNT skirts the suburbs of Canberra itself before meeting the start of The Australian Alps Walking track at Tharwa Visitor Centre, Namadgi.

This begins the 680 km AAWT to Walhalla in Victoria. This track is considered the grandest in Australia and is certainly not flat!

It takes in the whole Main Range including Kosciusko and beyond into the Victorian Alps.
