The Great Walk 2007

The Great Walk 2007  THE GREAT AUSTRALIAN CANCER BUSH WALK RAISING $1M FOR THE CANCER COUNCIL.  5th MAY 2008 – 27th JUNE 2009.

The Launch – Leaving Cape York

Thanks to Virgin Blue, Michael, Marg and Lisa were able to depart Melbourne for Cairns safely and with a great Virgin crew keen to support.

Then thankfully, Regional Pacific Airlines in FNQ, gave us flights so we all could arrive in Bamaga, FNQ in time for the 5th May.  It is tricky matching it all up - ask Marg!

The views were amazing, aided by the flying skills of the pilot in somewhat tricky conditions. A big thank you from Lisa and Marg for making the journey more pleasant.

Jim Buckley, Headmaster of the Bamaga School and Heather Baker, from the local TAFE college, warmly greeted us. A big thank you for showing us around Bamaga and the surrounding areas.

It was great to meet the locals and learn so much about the regions history.  In addition, thank you for sharing your home with Michael, Marg and Dave, and for the use of the garden.

Dave, the support crew driver, Michaels Uncle, slept there at night in the Tru Blu camper trailer.

The launch itself was very special where we paused for reflection of the feats of others who had been there before and, what Michael was about to embark on and why.

We also held a 'Welcome to Country' ceremony performed by the accredited representative of the local region, Jim.

The tourists joined in the launch, we got our first donations, and Michael felt like film star with all the flashes of cameras.  It was a great way to take the first steps of many for Michael as he now walks towards home and the $1M.
